metamorph is the culmination of years of fervor for learning. Its founders, Rahul Auradkar and Tejal Auradkar, connected due to a deep sense of purpose and commitment to the learning process. After completing his engineering degree, Rahul worked in the corporate sector but rarely felt inspired or driven to continue. On the side, he began teaching mathematics to a few students, spanning various educational boards including ICSE, IGCSE, SSC, HSC, ISC, and IB. During these moments, he found himself eagerly looking forward to and enjoying those precious hours of the day when he was surrounded by inquisitive minds from different educational backgrounds. The more discussions, problems, and challenges he encountered on his journey to becoming a teacher, the more purposeful his time with the students felt. It was around this time that the vision of starting a dedicated learning space began to take shape.
Tejal joined this venture as a co-founder in 2019. Coming from a background that endowed her with creative skills and the ability to plan and follow through, Tejal found herself immersed in tasks such as creating lists, engaging with parents, devising timetables, and organizing workshops. Additionally, she took on the role of a facilitator across different grades, boards, and subjects.
Tejal had always been passionate about language and had worked in diverse educational settings, ranging from under-resourced conventional government schools to Waldorf-inspired institutions and even a farm school following the IGCSE framework. Her fortunate travels to various countries allowed her to visit schools, deepening her understanding of different educational systems.
However, the vision for metamorph needed further definition. After numerous discussions with mentors and well-wishers, the founders decided to take the first step by establishing a couple of classrooms, transforming their idea into a physical reality."
After extensive research and observation of nearby trends, we realized the importance of selecting a meaningful name. We compiled a list of approximately twelve names and eventually narrowed it down to 'metamorphosis.' Metamorphosis, which signifies transformation or a change in shape, perfectly encapsulated our mission. It drew a strong parallel to the developmental process of butterflies, as they undergo a profound transformation to become beautiful creatures.
The name held profound relevance to our work and the age group we serve. It felt like the ideal choice, especially since we welcome students around the 6th grade (approximately 12 years old) when they are still in their developmental stages, akin to a cocoon. Over the course of the next six years, until the 12th grade (around 18 years old), we work diligently to transform them into confident young adults ready to embark on their journeys.
The only hindrance was the name's length – 'metamorphosis' felt a tad too lengthy. Fortunately, a dear friend suggested the shorter and more concise 'metamorph,' which we wholeheartedly embraced.
In our inaugural year, we commenced our operations within a shared space alongside Jaya Maya Tutorials in Gorai. During this initial phase, our academic offerings catered to 12 students pursuing Science and an additional 5 students in the Commerce stream. Our primary focus was on college-level students, as our collaborative partner, Jaya Maya Tutorials, was dedicated to serving the school-level section. At that time, metamorph was fortunate to have a total of 3 dedicated educators driving our mission forward.
In the subsequent year, we continued our operations from the shared space in Gorai alongside Jaya Maya Tutorials. During this period, our student enrollment saw significant growth, with 16 students joining the Science stream and an additional 11 students opting for the Commerce section. Our dedicated team of 3 teachers continued to oversee all aspects of our educational programs.
In addition to our academic endeavors, we ventured into a range of enriching experiences. These included organizing treks, nature walks within the picturesque Sanjay Gandhi National Park, educational visits to the Nehru Science Center, delightful food trails, movie outings, and engaging potluck gatherings. This year marked one of the most exciting and enjoyable periods in our journey.
As we looked ahead, we laid out an ambitious plan for metamorph's expansion. Exploring various locations for our future premises, we were determined to accommodate our growing aspirations. After thorough consideration, we found a new home for metamorph, setting the stage for our continued growth and development
Our journey commenced in February 2020 when we secured a commercial space at Kesar Plaza in Charkop, Kandivali West, Mumbai. Our grand opening was planned for the 25th of March 2020, but the unforeseen challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted our initial plans for the first year. However, we were not deterred; instead, we swiftly adapted by transitioning to online lectures with unwavering determination.
In the initial phase of our online operations, we welcomed a total of 3 students in the school section, 4 students in the Science stream, and 8 students in the Commerce section. This shift to online education required us to move beyond mere subject knowledge; it demanded our creativity and innovation to craft content that was not only informative but also engaging and enjoyable for our students. From the early days of phrases like 'Am I audible?' to the encouraging words 'You guys did well on the test,' it was a remarkable learning experience for all of us.
Our students' trust and unwavering support were the driving forces behind our personal and professional growth. To maintain a strong connection with our students and their families, we proactively conducted online workshops and held regular parent meetings, ensuring that our educational journey remained closely linked to our learners' and their parents' aspirations."
As we looked back on a year of progress, our team had grown stronger, armed with better tools and a shared vision. While delivering academic sessions remained our core focus, we aspired to offer much more. This year marked a significant milestone as we introduced our highly anticipated Chess Tournament. The response was enthusiastic, encouraging us to venture into organizing even more events, always adhering to stringent safety protocols and standards. These events provided our students with opportunities for engaging in healthy conversations, embarking on thrilling treks, enjoying movie nights, and participating in enriching workshops. Gradually, our team of facilitators began to expand, complementing our diverse offerings.
Notably, we proudly celebrated the graduation of our first batch of IGCSE 10th graders. Simultaneously, we continued to serve learners from outside Mumbai through online sessions, which garnered positive feedback from both students and parents. During this phase, our curriculum offerings expanded to encompass primarily State Board, ICSE, and Cambridge Curriculum. By year-end, we were gratified to receive favorable reviews on Google, a testament to the dedication and quality of education we aimed to provide.
As we entered Year 5, our ambitions led us to seek new opportunities, broaden our outreach, and meticulously execute our plans. This year proved to be a valuable lesson in embracing the unpredictability of our journey. We encountered unexpected admissions and unforeseen departures, reminding us that in the world of education, predictability is a rare luxury. To navigate these challenges, we learned to become more adaptable and open to taking calculated risks.
For any budding business, it's often challenging to decline opportunities, but we made a conscious decision to choose endeavors that aligned with our mission and contributed to our growth. This choice was not without its difficulties, particularly when we examined our financial spreadsheets, which indicated the need for even harder work and better performance to sustain our venture.
Nonetheless, Year 5 was marked by significant milestones. We welcomed our inaugural batch of IB students for grade 11, introducing subjects such as Business Management and Economics. In doing so, we provided real-life examples of how metamorph functioned as an educational entity. Additionally, we saw our first cohort of AS Level students join us. Gradually, we began to earn a reputation as a unique and distinguished learning space, setting us apart in the educational landscape."
